The View from Widow's Walk...and Another Look at the "Pagoda House"

Here are two more early morning photos of Good Harbor Beach to share -- one of Salt Island (the hunk or rock just off the far end of the beach) with one of the twin lighthouses in the background, taken from the third-floor Widow's Walk "overlook" (the roof-top area just outside that room's outside entrance). Widow's Walk is a particular favorite of many Blue Shutters fans because of this view. The other shot is a familiar one -- the "pagoda house" on the rocks at the edge of Good Harbor Beach (we call it the pagoda house because of the distinctive top, which reminds us of a Japanese pagoda). This has to be one of the most photographed spots in all of NE -- and this morning was no exception. Blue Shutters fan and expert photographer Marie Pelletier was out early this morning yet again shooting. We hope to share these photos with you soon.

Walking the Beach...and Thinking About the Super Bowl (and Our Chili Cook Off)

Without fail, there are folks walking the beach every Sunday -- even Super Bowl Sunday. To be honest, this photo of a lonely beach-walker was taken about 11 hours before the game kicks off, but our guess is there will be people enjoying Good Harbor Beach at 6:30 tonight. Not us, however -- we'll be watching the Super Bowl along with most of the rest of the US. But we'll be thinking ahead to next weekend, when we'll be able to turn our attention back to the beach -- and to our Chili Cook Off. Beautiful Beaches and Cute Puppies....Gloucester Has It All!

Who doesn't love cute puppy photos? So here's one -- and it's not just any puppy. This is Beatrice -- the newest addition to the Roy clan, the Blue Shutters friends who invade our place every August (and a few other times during the year). The Roys -- who hail from western Mass -- came all the way to Gloucester and the Cape Ann Animal Shelter to get Beatrice. I guess we not only have the most beautiful beach (and the best B&B) around ...we also have the cutest puppies.

Our judges will choose a winner that Saturday evening, and the chili champion gets a gift certificate for a free return visit (last year, our second and third place winners got prizes too, courtesy of guest judges from Topside Grill and Cape Ann Brewing Company). If you’d like to come and stay a night or two and just taste the chili, that’s OK too.

We rolled out our "snow girl" once again to help make another point -- this could be a great way to spice up your Valentines Day (just a few days later). While we'll be enjoying chili on Saturday night, there will be time for a romantic dinner, a glass of champagne by the fire, a quiet walk on the beach and much more that'll help you celebrate Valentines Day.

Snow fell throughout the day and a nippy wind blew across the beach, but a group of lucky "friends of the Blue Shutters" were able to enjoy a "Winter Escape" at our January Food & Wine Tasting. A big thank-you to Traveling Vineyard Wine Consultant Kathy Hill and Langham Hotel Exectuive Chef Mark Sapienza, who outdid themselves with this event. The wine was great and the food was awesome, but when you paired the two....wow! Check out these photos and you'll get a sense of some of the fun we had this night.

We've always insisted that winter at the Blue Shutters was among the most beautiful times of the year here -- and that's especially true when there's a fresh coat of snow on the ground. Celebrating the Patriots...and a Favorite Gloucester Spot

One of our favorite places in Gloucester is the Topside Grill -- a great spot for lunch or dinner...or a drink and some friendly conversation at the bar. And one of favorite past-times during these winter months is watching the NE Patriots. Tonight, we were lucky enough to do both, as innkeepers Patty, Ed and Tony stopped by to help send off the Topside crew for a winter break. It just so happened that Patriots were beating the Denver Broncos silly this night, and we were there as the Pats finished up their 45-10 blow-out. Patty decided to ring the bell at the Topside bar after each Patriot touchdown (and there were many) and then at the game's end to celebrate the victory. Here you see Patty ringing the game-ending bell with a few friends. From left: bartender Antoine, Patty, Topside "top-dog" Doug Silva and Patty's new pal Amy. Topside will be closed until April -- and we'll be there as soon as it opens. And we suggest you do the same!

Here's an awesome Good Harbor Beach photo that we just needed to share. It's another shot taken by Marie Pelletier of Salem, who is a frequent visitor to the beach and the Blue Shutters along with her husband Jack. We've spotlighted a lot of Marie's work here and on our Facebook page, including a number of photos of the footbridge. In a note she sent along with this photo, Marie points out that "the color was really different that morning." We think the colors are beautiful, the sky is breathtaking and the angle a bit different than many photos we see of this oft-photo'd footbridge. Join Us for our Wine & Food Tasting -- Coming Saturday January 21

The Blue Shutters Wine & Food Tastings are back, with the first event of 2012 scheduled for Saturday January 21.

On that afternoon, Langham Hotel Executive Chef Mark Sapienza and Traveling Vineyard Wine Consultant Kathy Hill will join forces to put together a fantastic selection of red and white wines paired with a menu of food items (that's Kathy on the left and Mark on the right in a photo from one of last year's tastings). Check back here details on the wines and the food menu.

We'll hold this late that Saturday afternoon, giving you plenty of time time to walk the beach (before tasting) and head into town after we're done (but most folks end up spending the entire evening sipping wine and eating right at the Blue Shutters).

This special event is free to guests of the Blue Shutters -- all you need to do is book a room for that Saturday night. If you're here for the wine tasting, you can add Friday night for half the usual rate.

And if you're into chili -- either eating or making chili -- ask us about our Chili Cook-Off scheduled for February 11. We had our first last year and it was a big hit. There'll be discounts for that weekend as well -- and plenty of chili, of course!

It's a New Year's Day tradition -- we watch from the Blue Shutters as folks flock to Good Harbor for a walk on the beach. We can't blame them -- can't think of a better way to begin the year than a walk on everyone's favorite beach (if you're really brave, you can join some of the Blue Shutters crowd for their annual "plunge" -- here's a shot of the "dippers" and their fans from New Year's Day 2011). Why not give it a try -- at least the walk, if not the plunge -- and if you do, please stop by the Blue Shutters anytime on New Year's Day to say hello (and warm up). A Holiday Tradition in Rockport and Gloucester

We have a lot of holiday traditions, and one of our favorites is a gathering of family and friends on the last Saturday before Christmas in Rockport -- for some shopping and Christmas caroling -- followed by dinner at the Topside Grill in Gloucester. Each year on this Saturday in December, Rockport hosts a retelling of the Nativity, with townspeople dressed as shepherds, Roman soliders, the three kings and Mary and Joseph. The pagent takes place on the streets of Rockport and ends with the singing of Christmas carols and -- for our crowd -- a visit to Tucks to warm up (and load up on some candy). We then head over to Topside for dinner, where the Silva family -- owners of the restaurant -- save a special spot for our crowd. A big thank you to Doug, Dennis and Dawn Silva...and to all the family and friends who joined the Blue Shutters innkeepers for this evening. Maybe next year you can make this a holiday tradition of your own.

Not a Creature is Stirring...and That Makes Good Harbor Beach a Great Choice This Holiday Week

Cape Ann -- and European Royalty -- Get the "Jeopardy" Treatment

There are a bunch of Jeopardy fans around the Blue Shutters (ask the innkeepers about their history of trivia triumphs) so we were very pleased to hear that our neck of the woods was featured on tonite's show. The answer: "In 1623, this Massachusetts Cape was named after the then queen of England." The question of course was Cape Ann! However, Wikipedia says Cape Ann was named after the mother of King Charles I, Anne of Denmark. Whatever the real story, we can tell you this for sure -- Cape Ann's first name was "Cape Tragabigzanda" (don't know how you feel, but we're happy with this change).

Decking the Halls and Helping Those in Need

Over the years, many friends, family and neighbors have contributed ornaments for the Blue Shutters Christmas tree. Look closely and you'll see shells, ships, beachchairs, Santa in sunglasses and similar beach-themed ornaments. There are also those that reflect the hometowns of our guests -- cows from Vermont, holiday wishes from Avon Lake, OH, and more. One addition to our Christmas tree this year is a basket of food items for Open Door, our local Gloucester food pantry. Thanks again to our 2011 tree-trimmers, who not only helped deck the halls of the Blue Shutters -- they also made important contributions to those in need of our help this holiday season.

A big thank you to the friends, family and neighbors who joined us for Saturday's Holiday Tree-Trimming. As you can see from the photos here, folks had a lot of fun -- decorating the tree, enjoying hot apple cider and some holiday treats and hanging with a special guest...the Coors Light girl (that's her in the Santa cap). We're in the holiday spirit here at the Blue Shutters. We've strung lights across the front of the inn and began decorating the main room -- the photo here gives you a sneak peek. Christmas on Cape Ann -- a month-long series of events in celebration of the holiday season -- kicks off this weekend. We've already had one group of guests -- a family from Connecticut -- travel here to enjoy the Cape Ann Symphony Holiday Pops performance on Saturday night. There's another show tomorrow -- and also Sunday there's the annual Gloucester Santa Parade. Throughout the month of December, there'll be other holiday events (our particular favorite is the pagent in Rockport on December 17).

If you're free tomorrow -- and live in the Greater Boston area -- you owe it to yourself to come up for the day. The weather today was awesome -- again -- with temps in the mid-60s, and Sunday promises to be another beauty.

You should also plan a night or two at the Blue Shutters this holiday season -- we've already begun decorating the inn. But the best is yet to come -- come stay with us next Saturday, December 3, when we'll have our annual tree-trimming party with holiday treats, a roaring fireplace and lots of good cheer. - Ed and Annmarie will be at the Blue Shutters for Thanksgiving and throughout the holiday weekend, so if you're thinking about coming up anytime over the next few days, you'll have some company
- if you're looking to treat yourself to Thanksgiving dinner out, our friends at the Topside Grille have something special planned for you (roast stuffed turkey with apple walnut stuffing, honey glazed Virginia Ham with a pineapple raisin sauce, roasted leg of Spring lamb...all served with a cup of turkey rice soup, butternut squash, broccoli, whipped potato, roasted sweet potatoes and more!)

Our November 20th Taste of Latin America Open House was a big success -- for Por Cristo and for the old and new friends who were here to enjoy the afternoon. A big thanks to those who were here -- family, friends, neighbors and even folks who passed by and dropped in -- and came away with some of these special treasues, with the proceeds going to support the work of Por Cristo in Ecuador (that's a shot of these items that filled our Fireside room, that became a shopping bazaar for the day). A final reminder about today's Taste of Latin America Open House -- and a early morning weather update. Who's Having Fun on the Beach in November? Surfers and Pooches...and Those of Us Who Watch Them

In the summer we watch the beachgoers, in the winter it's the snow falling on Good Harbor Beach and in the spring, you'll see the birds returning to Cape Ann. And this time of year -- in fact any time from mid-September or mid-May -- we enjoy watching the dogs and the surfers, who always seems to be having a particularly great time. The pilgrims may have passed on Cape Ann before finding their way to Plymouth, but that shouldn't stop you from chosing the Blue Shutters for your Thanksgiving holiday weekend destination. We just got a update from our friends at the Topside Grille reminding us that they're serving Thanksgiving dinner, and we think this -- combined with some pre-dinner and after-dinner fun at the Blue Shutters and Good Harbor Beach -- is a great reason to come up for this holiday. Stay the entire weekend and work off some of that turkey with walks on the beach, or just sit by the fireplace and relax. This is also a great time to get a jump on holiday shopping at some of the unique spots in Gloucester and Rockport. Anniversaries -- Another Reason to Come Visit the Blue Shutters

Over the years, the Blue Shutters has attracted all kinds of guests -- single travelers, couples, families, groups -- who are here for any number of reasons -- some vacation days, a business trip, visiting family or celebrating a special occassion. In recent weeks, we've seen a number of couples here to mark an anniversary -- in October, Denise and Jim from western Massachusetts came back for a return anniversary visit and spent time in Gloucester, Rockport and nearby Salem. This past Friday and Saturday, another special couple chose the Blue Shutters for a anniversay getaway -- Joe and Connie. That's them in the photo here, taken at one of our wine and food tastings (Joe's the one looking sophisticated as he prepares to sip some chardonnay; Connie is sitting alongside innkeeper AnnMarie, listening intently to our visiting chef, Mark Sapienza). Joe is here pretty often, as he's considered our official "back-up innkeeper" -- in fact, last October he watched over the Shutters while the real innkeepers vacationed in Florida. This weekend, Joe and Connie enjoyed walks in downtown Rockport, a bite in Gloucester, games and conversation by the fireplace, and brunch on Sunday morning at the Topside Grill (anniversary or not, you should check this out!). Their experience these past few days provides a great example of the reasons why folks like Denise and Jim and many others come here for an anniversary celebration. This was another busy weekend at the Blue Shutters, with a bachelorette party from Connecticut, some regulars from western Massachusetts, new Blue Shutters fans from greater Boston and a family from Staten Island, NY. There was mom and dad, their daughter and son-in-law, and their son and daughter-in-law...plus grandson Danny. As we've said many times in the past, the Blue Shutters is a great spot for family gatherings, and this weekend provided further proof. They enjoyed walks on the beach, fun at a local playground, dinner downtown, a road trip to nearby Newburyport...and a few sips of Irish whiskey on the front steps at the end of the day. When we launched the Blue Shutters BeachCam this summer, we hoped a few friends of the Blue Shutters -- and prospective guests -- would take notice. In fact, the reaction was beyond expectations -- and now webcam-mania is sweeping through all of Cape Ann. We actually got the idea for a webcam from our friends at Good Morning Gloucester, where we spotted a FiestaCam with images of the carnival at the St. Peter's Feast in late June. Good Morning Gloucester is now leading the charge to get other webcams installed around Cape Ann, giving everyone a look at restaurants, the harbor and other popular spots. You can visit a new site to see the current webcams and sign up for alerts when new live video comes online. But remember, there will always be one Blue Shutters BeachCam, with views of everyone's favorite Good Harbor Beach.

Just as our hockey heroes were leaving the Blue Shutters, hundreds of runners began passing by our front door as the the Lone Gull 10K wrapped up by the Good Harbor Beach footbridge. Among the runners was our friend Joe, who's wife Collette works with Tony (when he's not innkeeping). Here's a shot of some the runners finishing up along Nautilus Road. Our resident Bruins legend, Matt Ravlich, was back again for a week with his wife Geri and her cousin Barbara. But what made the Shutters a real hockey town for the weekend of Sept 16-18: the arrival of the "Here for the Beer" women's hockey team. The girls -- who come from all parts of eastern Massachusetts -- were here for a hockey tournament in Gloucester, and fortunately this overlapped with the Ravlich's stay here. We couldn't resist snapping this photo of Matt with some of the team -- you'll notice Matt holding the Blue Shutters version of the Stanley Cup, which we presented to him earlier this summer. We're looking forward to having all these folks back again for more hockey fever at the Blue Shutters.

We've always talked about Good Harbor Beach as a great place to shoot photos, but as this shows, there are other very picturesque parts of our town. Our First "Blue Shutters Beachside Reviews & Comments Contest" Winner

A few months back, we kicked off an effort aimed at encouraging guests to share their thoughts about their stay at the Blue Shutters. Every three months -- at the end of the summer, fall, winter and spring -- we'll gather up TripAdvisor and Yelp reviews, notes from our guest book, comments from our blog and any cards and letters we received. We'll then pick one at random and give that person a $50 gift card good for a return visit to the Blue Shutters.

We have our first winner -- selected from the dozens of "contestants" from the summer of 2011: Lori, John and Connor of Rochester, NY. They stayed with us in early July and not only left a note in our guest book; they also posted a TripAdvisor review.

We just returned home from a wonderful stay in Gloucester at the Blue Shutters Beachside Inn. The proximity to the beach, the amazing view and spacious accomodations (we were in the Beachside rooms) made our stay so much fun. We have a 20 month old and we were nervous about traveling with him to the beach but it was a piece of cake! The beach was a very short walk away and was right near the calm tide pool and ocean.

The spacious yard and lawn games also provided additional entertainment. It felt less like staying at a hotel and more like visiting a good friend's spacious house. There was plenty to keep us occupied right at the Inn. We loved kicking back on the front lawn and enjoying the view during naptime and after our son went down to sleep at night.

We are already discussing our visit back next year...and family members that stayed elsewhere want to join us at Blue Shutters:)

If the weather experts are correct, you'll have an opportunity to see for yourself on Sunday as Irene barrells through New England. You're invited to come join us -- snug and secure here at the Blue Shutters -- but if you can't, we encourage you to check out our webcam, which will remain focused on Good Harbor Beach throughout the storm. Here's a photo from this morning -- a picture that gives new meaning to the term "calm before the storm". There are folks on the beach, surfers in the water and guests like these enjoying breakfast -- and the view -- before heading down for some fun of their own (the webcam is there in the lower left corner, in a box on the window sill). It's a beautiful start to this Saturday, so while you might want to be here for Mother Nature's show tomorrow, you may be able to squeeze in a few hours at the beach. A Blue Shutters Baby

This is Garrett, who has enjoyed many fun days at the Blue Shutters since he was born last year. Those of you who have visited the Shutters this summer may have seen him -- he and and his sister, Logan, and their mom and dad, stayed here in July and again in August. You'll see them every morning packed up for a trip to Good Harbor Beach. Before Garrett was born, the family made several trips to the Shutters -- in fact, dad stayed here the night before their wedding. And his grandfather was the very first guest of the Blue Shutters back in 2007 -- months before our "official" opening (he is also the organizer of an annual bocce ball tournament at Good Harbor Beach....the contestants stay right here at the Shutters). There are many kids who have developed a special connection with our B&B, and Garrett is one of them...a real "Blue Shutters Baby."

Gloucester's Man at the Wheel...on the Arm

There are many ways fans of Gloucester can show their love for our favorite seaside town -- you'll find "The Man at the Wheel" emblazoned on tee-shirts, baseball caps, refridgerator magnets, ashtrays and coffee mugs up and down Main Street. But we were particularly impressed with one Blue Shutters guest -- Bob from Maryland -- who showed us this most awesome tattoo. Bob, who has roots here, says he always has Gloucester with him wherever he goes.

Back on the Beach!

Earlier today we shared a photo of Good Harbor in the morning and predicted it was going to be a great beach day. Well, we were right -- by mid-day, the scene looked a lot like a summer weekend, with many sunlovers flocking to the beach. Check out this photo of folks splashing in the waves, wading along the channel and soaking up rays. Tomorrow will be even nicer -- and if you closely at the Blue Shutters sign in the lower left corner, you'll see we have vacancies (tonight and tomorrow). So come join us...back on the beach!

The Sun is Back!

Overall it has been a great summer weatherwise, but the past few days haven't been the best. While there's still fun to be had here rain or shine, it's always better when the sun is out on these summer days. And as you can see from this photo, it's sunny again. You can see the sun shining on the water and the crews out cleaning the sand. According to the weather experts, tomorrow promises to be even better. If the return of sunshine is getting you thinking about the beach again, keep in mind that we do have a room open -- just one -- tomorrow (Thursday, August 18). Don't wait too long -- these rooms don't stay open very long. And keep in mind that there are more rooms available through the end of August and into Labor Day weekend. The Benefits of Innkeeping

Phillipe is just one of the many visitors we've seen from Montreal this summer -- Natalie, Rickie, Boom Boom, Jacques and Michelle are just some of the other friends from this part of Canada that have enjoyed the Blue Shutters in recent months.

When Worlds Collide -- Families Meeting Families at the Blue Shutters

We've made many new friends since we took over the Blue Shutters in 2007, but what's just as great -- when friendships develop among our guests. Earlier this summer, guests from Montreal made new friends with a family was western Massachusetts. In July, a couple from Ohio reunited with regular guests from central Massachusetts. And in early August, we witnessed the annual meeting of two of the largest family groups who visit the Shutters -- the Roys and the Woods. The Roys are a group of sisters from western Massachusetts who come with their mom and daughters. The Woods are an extended family from Pennsylvania (and a few stragglers from Massachusetts). At one point, these two groups filled 10 of the 12 rooms at the Blue Shutters -- and when then weren't in their rooms, they mingled on our lawn and gathered around the firepit at night. Most of the group headed out today, but before they did we pulled some of them together for this photo. As we've said in the past, you never know who'll you'll meet at the Blue Shutters -- now we can add...you never know what new friends you'll make.

The Experts Finally Agree: Good Harbor Is "The Perfect Beach"

Awhile back, we wrote a piece about the Boston Globe's list of the top 10 beaches in Massacahusetts -- and wondered why Good Harbor Beach didn't make the list. We, along with many other Good Harbor lovers, commented on that story...and it seemed to have made an impact. In yesterday's Globe, Good Harbor was featured in the paper's "On the Water" series focusing on "New England's classic summer pastime." It's a nice article, which talks about "a perfect day on the the perfect beach" and describes Good Harbor as "a perennial favorite". The many friends of the Blue Shutters who are returning year after year for a stay here obviously agree. Many of the guests we're seeing this summer have been coming here since we took over the Blue Shutters in 2007 -- and even more are signing up for next year. While we think the fun and relaxation folks find at the Blue Shutters is a big part of the attraction, we know that the wonderful beach that's right outside our doors makes this place extra special. Check out the article (there's a short video as well) -- the comments from the beachgoers are great...but they don't match all the awesome reviews that our guests have shared with us!

The Blue Shutters: A Place for Fans of the Sox, Yankees, Mets, Phillies and More

We're in the middle of baseball season, and we thought it was a good time to celebrate our favorite teams -- and not just the Red Sox. While it's true we're here in the heart of Red Sox Nation, we've had a fair number of Yankee fans pass through the Shutters -- just last week, Bob from Staten Island was here, proudly displaying his "Yank Fan" license plate in our lot. We also had a family of Mets fans from New Jersey and two couples from Philadelphia who sported their Phillies hats. And today, little Morgan just had to put on her Dustin Pedroia jersey when she saw innkeeper Tony strutting around with his Yankee shirt. So no matter what team you root for, you're welcome at the Blue Shutters -- feel free to wear your colors proudly (if they happen to be Yankee colors, you may get extra special treatment).

Bruins Fever Hits The Blue Shutters!

For the past month, Boston Bruins fans all across New England have been celebrating our team's championship -- and the Stanley Cup trophy has made appearances in cities and towns across the region. This weekend, the Blue Shutters Beachside Inn got into the act as we welcomed back old friends Geri and Matt Ravlich. Matt played for the Bruins back in the Bobby Orr era and proudly wears the ring from the Bruins championship season in 1972. Matt and Geri are also big fans of the Blue Shutters and were here for another visit this weekend. In Matt's honor, we built a replica of Stanley Cup (that's the smaller one of the table in this photo -- Matt is on the right, Geri in the center and innkeeper Ed on the left). When one of our guests saw our trophy, he ran to the car and pulled the life-size version out of his trunk (we later saw him carry the trophy over his head down to Good Harbor Beach). You never know who'll you see at the Blue Shutters -- you just might spot Matt Ravlich here later this summer...he and Geri will be back in a few weeks, next month and in September!

Do You Agree? Good Harbor Should Top the List of the Region's Best Beaches

The Boston Globe just ran it's annual list of Massachusetts' top 10 beaches and anyone who has ever visited the Blue Shutters will be surprised to learn that Good Harbor Beach didn't make this list. Check out the story and make sure you read the comments by clicking on the "Discuss" link -- and you'll see one from us. Here's our take on this -- if you feel as we do, go ahead and add your own thoughts.

"Good Harbor needs to be on this list of top beaches -- I'm not surprised that I'm not the only one who called this out here. This beach has so much more to offer -- a long, clean sandy strip of sand; an island you can walk to at low tide; dunes you can relax along; a tidal creek you can drift on; a "lagoon" where the creek and the ocean meet; rocks you can explore; and some of the nicest views you'll see in all of NE -- of Cape Ann's unique twin light houses, spectacular homes, boats on the horizon and, each morning, an amazing sunrise. And it's all just minutes from Route 128 and walking distance to a supermarket, diner and ice cream shop -- no long lines of traffic to get here and no nasty "greenheads" that plague other beaches. They don't call this Good Harbor for nothing -- in fact, one of our guests (we own the Blue Shutters Beachside B&B here) just noted that we should rename it "Best Harbor" Beach. I can't imagine that the folks who made these choices have ever visited this beach. Come on up and see for yourself...and I'm sure Good Harbor will make the list next year."

It's July 4th -- for many, the official start of summer (although we've enjoyed many great beach days already this season). There were already beachgoers on the sand before 8 this morning (and some folks were out even earlier for the sunrise). Last night there were fireworks over Gloucester Harbor -- and we expect to see more rockets over Good Harbor and Long Beach tonight. Cape Ann is a very popular spot for photographers -- we've featured many of our own photos and those shared by our guests right here on the this website and on our Facebook page. We also have some coffee-table books in our Main Room that feature some of our favorite photographers -- there's our former chambermaid, Vickie Coe (who's a student at the one of best photography schools, the Corcoran College of Art + Design) School) and Kirk Williamson who helped us when we first took over the Blue Shutters. Something New on the Cape Ann Scene: Gloucester Dine Dance Cruise

We're always telling folks about the fun happenings around Cape Ann, and often we go out and experience these activities ourselves just to make sure they'll be fun for our guests. Well, last night two of the innkeepers had one the best nights ever, with a new addition to the Gloucester scene....a Dine Dance Cruise. Great music, good food and a beautiful cruise down the coast to Marblehead Harbor -- how can it get any better? These cruises will run every Friday night throughout the summer -- next up is the legendary James Montgomery and his band. If it's half as much fun as an evening with the Sugarbabies (that's them in the photo here, with their lead singer waving to folks on the Gloucester docks), you're are in for a real treat. Check out the Gloucester Dine Dance Cruise website (www.gddcruise.com) for the full schedule -- the cruise takes place on the Privateer IV, where many have enjoyed great whale watching with Seven Seas Whale Watch. Still Time to Enjoy the Greasy Pole and Saint Peter's Feast...and Some Great Beach Days

There's still time to experience Gloucester's Saint Peter's Feast and catch the world-famous greasy pole contest -- and the weather is expect to make this the best of the four-day celebration in downtown Gloucester. Despite the sometimes wet and cloudy weather, the Feast has entertained us with music at the bandstand, food and amusement rides at the carnival, and the boat races and greasy pole challenges that lead to today's final championship contest. You can check out a schedule of events here -- and the new Fiesta webcam -- but we can tell you there will be even more of what we've seen the past few days plus the Blessing of the Fleet, religious services and the procession through the streets of Gloucester. And if you'd like to grab some time on the beach, the weather should cooperate for you as well today. The Feast goes late into the night, and when you're done you can come rest up at the Blue Shutters. We still have rooms for tonite -- and by the way, tomorrow and Tuesday promise to be great beach days!

Boat Drinks Part II -- A Celebration of Summer...and the Championship Bruins

A few weeks ago, we did a post here on the Jimmy Buffett song "Boat Drinks" and mentioned that it fit the mood at the time. Jimmy wrote about wishing for warm weather (and a margaratia or similar "boat drink") during a mid-winter gig in Boston many years ago. He even made a hockey reference, with the "visitors scoring on the home rink." At the time we posted a clip to that song, we were laboring through a cold wet spell in early June -- and the Bruins had just lost to the Canucks in the Stanley Cup Finals. Last night, a few of us saw Buffett in concert (that's the entire group in the photo here), and he sang the very same song -- with new lyrics and a new meaning. Check out this clip (song # 6). It was a celebration of the Bruins championship...and of the 80 degree temperatures that gave the day a summer-like feel. When we wrote about "Boat Drinks" earlier this month, we said warmer days were ahead -- we were right, as evidenced by this weekend's weather at Good Harbor Beach (if you still have a chance, come out and see for yourself). And while we didn't predict the Bruins victory -- but we were sure hoping for it!

Making History...The Beachside Variety

Our last post focused on a group with deep roots into Gloucester's seafaring history, and here we're spotlighting guests who are making a new kind of history, focused on another side -- the "beachside" -- of our region. This weekend, we're playing host to the "2nd Annual Blue Shutters Benjamin Babes & Brutes Beach Bocci Ball Tournament." The Benjamin family has a special connection with the Blue Shutters -- Mom and Dad treated their daughter and her fiance to a stay at the Shutters a few years back, and the young couple returned shortly after they married and later after having each of their two kids. Mom and Dad have also arranged to have their son, a Navy officer (back to the seafaring roots), stay with us. Last year, they encouraged friends to use the Blue Shutters as their base of operations for a bocci ball tournament. And in 2011, they turned it up a notch or two -- there are even more contestants, and we're sure there'll be even more fun. So in just a few days, the Blue Shutters has experienced a piece of Gloucester's legendary seafaring history and played a part in adding to the region's reputation for beaschside fun. We're a pretty lucky bunch!

A Bit of Gloucester History at the Blue Shutters

The four of us took over the Blue Shutters in early 2007, but it feels like we've been here forever. Our roots may have been down 128 a few exits -- in Burlington, Woburn and Stoneham -- but Gloucester has always part of lives. It's where we came on a summer Saturday for a few hours of Good Harbor Beach fun, on a Friday night for some dancing at Little Earls and on a Sunday afternoon for dinner out with Mom and Dad.

But our Gloucester history seems insignificant when compared with the group staying here at the Blue Shutters this week. It's a gathering of the direct descendants of Capt. Elias Davis and James Mansfield, described by one of the organizers --Rev. Graham M. Patterson --as "late 18th and 19th century contemporaries who figure prominently in Gloucester's seafaring history."

Graham is here to host a memorial gathering for his mother, Marion Mansfield, who he describes as "the last of her generation of Mansfields." According to Graham, their "forbearer James Mansfield (1765-1842) established a ship's chandlery on Front Street in 1792. From there he built one of the largest fleets of fishing schooners in mid-19th century Gloucester. On the 1852 Walling Map, the Mansfield Wharf is the largest on the western end of the harbor. He built a four-story, double Federal house at No. 26 and No. 28 Front Street in 1832, the year my great-great grandmother Abigail Somes Davis married Alfred Mansfield, Sr."

He goes on to talk about his great-great grandmother Abigail Somes Davis Mansfield (1811-1900), who "befriended Fitz Lane (1804-1865) from the days of her childhood, purchased his paintings, and left them to my cousin Alfred Mansfield Brooks." Graham tells us that one of his ancestors owned the California, which is featured in one of Fitz Henry Lane's most celebrated paintings at the Cape Ann Museum. A great uncle left the museum a cache of Fitz Henry Lane drawings in the 1940s, and since the very opening of the Cape Ann Museum, some of the many Mansfield family fine arts objects donated to the Cape Ann Museum have been housed there.

Nearly a dozen Mansfield cousins -- from Paris, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New Hampshire and here in Massachusetts -- are attending this reunion, touring both the Cape Ann Museum and Cape Ann itself with Linn Parisi, serving as tour guide, following the journal entries of Graham's grandmother, Adelaide Mansfield, which she made during her trips to Gloucester between 1915 and 1948.

We feel very fortunate to have this group with us this week -- while we hope we're contributing to Gloucester's future with our work here at the Blue Shutters, we also think it's important to celebrate the unique history of this city and surrounding towns.
